An afternoon project that turns a thrift-store tea cup collection into gifts.
I've been making these for two years. They're easier than they look, the only investment is the wax (about $30 for a pound), and people genuinely love receiving them.
Beeswax melts at about 145°F (63°C). Low and slow in a double boiler — don't try to rush it in the microwave, it scorches. A pound of pellets becomes about a pound of liquid wax in maybe 20 minutes.
While the wax melts, dip the metal end of a wick in melted wax and press it firmly to the bottom centre of your cup. Let it cool — this anchors it.
Wrap the top of the wick around a pencil resting across the rim. This keeps it centred during pouring.
Pour slowly. Fill to about 1/2 inch from the top. If you're adding essential oils, do it just before pouring, about 25-30 drops per pound of wax.
Cool at room temperature, not in the fridge. About 4 hours to set fully. Trim the wick to 1/4 inch before lighting.
Each tea cup gets about 12-15 hours of burn time.
